We invite submissions or writing and visual art to the first edition of Gabble; a magazine of art criticism to be published at 7pm on Wednesday the 10th of December 2025 at Greatorex Street Gallery, London alongside a show featuring the included artists. The magazine will include up to 15 pieces of art criticism paired with images of the work it responds to which will also displayed in the gallery on the night of publication and in subsequent days.

Deadline: 1st of September 2025

Writers:

Submit a piece of art criticism up to 2000 words (or a pitch accompanied by a writing sample) in a PDF alongside a short bio.

Interpret 'art criticism' broadly - we will accept poetry and fiction that responds directly to an artwork or artistic practice, interviews with artists, theoretical essays and reviews. We will prioritise pieces that engage with the work of peers: we would much rather publish a piece about your friend or rival’s paintings than someone famous.

We will pay between £30 - £70 for original writing. We acknowledge that this is low but are operating without funding and not-for-profit.

Please indicate alongside your submission whether you believe that the artist(s) that you are writing about would wish to have images of their work included in the magazine and show their work at Greatorex Street Gallery in December. You do not need to obtain their permission to submit. We will contact the artist if your piece if chosen for publication and ask for their permission to publish images of their work. They do not need to submit a separate application to be considered.

Artists:

Submit up to 10 images of recent work in one PDF alongside a short statement and bio.

If these are chosen for publication, we will commission a writer to produce a piece responding to your work or to interview you. This piece will be published in the magazine alongside images of your work. You will also be invited to display your work at a group show at Greatorex Street Gallery (opening 10th December).

If you would like to be included but do not have publication suitable images, please submit anyway and we can arrange to have some photos taken. We may also be interested in publishing process images or images of you working in your studio (although there is no obligation to submit these).

There is a submission fee of £7 for both artists and writers. This will allow us to pay contributors. If you feel that this fee is a barrier to submitting, please send us an email and we will waive it (no proof required).
